Flokati rugs are the rugs that have roots in ancient Greece culture. Even in the Odyssey by Homer there were some words about these rugs and Greek weavers.
As it is known the people who invented Flokati rugs are the Vlachos who lived in Samaria – the highest village in Pinios Mountains. Originally, Flokati-rugs were used by shepherds to warm them during cold winters on pastures.
The Greek shepherds sheared their sheep and goats; the wool was sold to the nearby villagers from Thessaly, Macedonia and other regions. During long winter month women weaved Flokati rugs and sold them at local markets.
But in early 1960s FLokati rugs were replaced by other carpet products. Only now, some Greece manufacturers and carpet weavers renewed the production of high-quality Flokati rugs and other handmade woolen carpets.
