Karastan Rugs
Handmade carpet weaving in Armenia is known from the times of extreme antiquity. The making of pile carpets was spread over the whole territory of the country, but the main its centers always were – Yerevan, Leninakansky, Stepanovsky, Igevansky, Sevansky, Zangezursky.
The main characteristic feature of karastan rugs is a geometrized plant ornament, which combines flower motives, animals and birds’ images and many other things.
According to the complicity and interweaving of ornamentation, the coherency of color decision Karastan rugs can be called indeed marvelous. Karastan rugs are a reflection of creativeness and fantasy of many generations of weaving art masters.
Such pile-less rugs as carpets were widely spread in Armenia. Karastan rugs also have a rich ornamentation, but very often their d�cor is built on combination of coloured strips, to the ends of which multicoloured brushes are sewn.
