Most commonly, square rugs are unique and rare masterpieces of art. As their name implies, the rugs have equal width and length and their diameter is the same. The oldest square rug backdates by sixteenth century, they are known under the name of Mamluk. Mamluk rugs were weaved in Egypt and had complex geometric designs with large medallions. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries square rugs were also weaved in French Aubusson and Savonnerie styles.
In China square rugs were weaved in Tientsin and Beijing.
